HIFI HANGAR (2 input) PSA-02 Passive Preamp Pre Amplifier Gold Plated
Description
Its been a while in the pipeline, and many prototypes have been played withbut its finally here.
The Hifi Hangar PSA-02 (2 input passive stepped attenuator) uses a 20k, 21 stepped gold plated attenuator, using surface mount resistors.
The case and knob are of the highest quality and are made in Germany.
It uses twisted pairs of silver plated copper, 7 strand internal cable, sleeved in PTFE, in the shortest manageable lengths, for the purest signal path.
The input switch is very high quality and it's contacts are silver plated. The RCA terminals are the highest quality, Genuine Neutrik gold plated ones.
We listened to our customers when designing this product, and took all suggestions on board, we were asked for a very small passive, that could be tucked away if possible, also it had to be visually neutral in appearance, and as many products are now brushed aluminium, we chose the front panel accordingly. Also as our customers used a variety of gear, we were asked for an anonymous product, so it matched well with any chosen equipment, with this in mind, we chose to put the graphics on the back panel and not on the front, as not to muddle the clean lines of the design.
Sonically, we have had requests for a copper and a silver wired version, so we have chosen PTFE sleeved, seven strand, silver plated copper as a 'best of both worlds solution
The Gold plated attenuators have been pre-treated with switch lubricant before assembly to give extended life.
They have been assembled for us in Hampshire, England, by a highly qualified electronic designer, by hand, in small batches.
This is the the 2 input version, there is also a single input version available.
We truly believe this to be a true audiophile product, that we use everyday in the shop, they have been used with amplifiers from £100, to in excess of £25,000 with great results. all you hear is the power amp, with no coloration from the pre
What are the attenuation steps?
Off, -60dB, -51dB, -44dB, -39dB, -35dB, -32dB, -29dB, -26dB, -24dB, -22dB, -20dB, -18dB, -16dB, -14dB, -12dB, -10dB, -8dB, -6dB, -3dB, 0dB
What about interconnects?
As a general rule of thumb, the shorter the better. Always use a good quality, low capacitance interconnect with a passive pre, especially on the output. Typical cable lengths of 0.5-1.2m should be no problem.
Having said that we have simulated the PSA01 with a cable capacitance of 1nF (about 10m of typical cable!) and the -3dB point is still always above 80 kHz.
What are the advantages of the PSA02?
Fewer components in the signal chain to colour the sound.
What are the disadvantages?
The PSA02 cannot amplify signals, only attenuate them. This presents no problem with modern, high output sources such as a typical CD player.
The completely passive PSA02 is unsuited to driving long cable runs. For driving long cable runs a powered line driver stage is recommended.
